Communication Center

A few disclaimers--- #1- these pictures are not very good. #2- this is a work in progress, but this is what I have so far.

So, lest you think I was kidding that our decor is "better crate and barrel", I am here to prove my point. I wanted to do something a bit more quaint and charming than what I am about to show you, but when I showed my dh all my nicely bookmarked blogs with all the marvelous ideas, all he saw was $$$ and time. Both of which he and I are short on. So here it is. Our solution for a communication center/display board.

In our very small home, we have this one blank wall (blank only because there is a heater on the bottom fourth of the wall). We have been lacking anywhere to hang a calendar, write notes, hang projects... so, my dh's quick and easy version of a solution is this large piece of sheet metal. As hideous as it is, I don't hate it. Like I said, it is a work in progress and I envision us making good use of this space.

The board (above) will be a place for the kids to hang their projects, display things we are learning about, and keep track of our family schedule. This close up of the bottom half shows our calendar (highlighted for baseball season) and some of how I hope to display school topics we are studying. I think it will be nice for dad to see at a glance what we are working on and remind the kids what our focus is. My favorite things:

The little white board- I don't know why, but it helps to have the day spelled out. The kids could look at the calendar, but they like our board. And, I am finding that it helps me. I fill it out the night before and the one night I didn't, I forgot Grandma's eye dr appt the next day (it worked out though :)).

The "don't forget to bring" clip below the white board- this has turned out to be very useful. Things like hit-a-thon forms for baseball, dr. appt forms, ... all go in this clip and are ready to go. The top of the board has a space for each of the kids to display their own projects. It just happens that when we put this board up a while back Erin was coloring Batman pictures with James, so that is what was put there. I have hopes for something a bit more... well, less super hero- ish. ;)
