Wrapping it Up::October 20-November 9

In my life this week last month…

We ended October with lots of fun stuff-

Uncles putting nephews in crazy wigs, a guys' day at the Raider's football game, time playing games with a special cousin, a mom and son movie date (me and James), food at Mark's favorite eatery- the Black Bear Diner, an afternoon at Chuck E. Cheese with Friends (to celebrate completing a level of Barton Reading), and Mark's new dog wearing his matching Raider's shirt.

Things I am working on…

Forming new habits- we are trying to walk first thing every morning for about an hour. It has been... interesting. My boys think I am trying to kill them. We are on the beginning of week three and they still are not quite over it yet.

Of course, we are also reducing sugar, drinking almost no soda (my oldest kids never had soda!), and taking a break from electronics as well (where have I heard that before?). It is sort of a "mommy boot-camp".  At times it is amazingly fruitful and at times extremely challenging. The key, I find, is to not make it so much about what we are not doing but about we are doing

One of the favorite things that we have been doing on these cold evenings, now that being outdoors is not practical, is playing "Chicken Foot". Chicken Foot is a face paced domino game that is pretty easy to play, making it a perfect game for a tired mom and dad to play with the kids on a weekday.

I'm reading...

Eat This, Not That! 2013: The No-Diet Weight Loss Solution

To go along with the above resolutions to form better health habits for our family, we purchased this book. What I love is that it allows for the fact that you may need to grab a bite out or just want to indulge in that sugary cereal- but it arms the reader with information to make the "better choice" if not always the best choice. Although, there are many "best" choices to be found as well.

Places we’re going and people we’re seeing…

James and his Spanish Class buddies performed a skit all for the moms and siblings using puppets.

Mark is love love loving his Friday afternoon class at the humane society. These are a few of the dogs he gets to "socialize" during his time there. He has gotten lots of positive feedback from the instructors and I can tell it has been a real boost to his confidence.

Some time spent with these special little people! I do have the cutest grand-kids (I know, all babies are the sweetest and the best, but I just had to say it! :)).

I’m grateful for…

People that I can ask to pray for me while I am struggling with the crazy
hormonal changes of being an almost 50 year-old.

I'm praying for...

All those who have asked for prayer, and especially for
those young people who are discerning their vocation in life.

  1. Your blog title captured my attention over at Collage Friday and I just wanted to pop over and say "hello." I laughed about the walking in the mornings because at the beginning of this year we started a "formal" P.E. program and the first week or two my kids also thought they were suffering. Ha!

  2. And my kiddos were complaining about walking 15-20 minutes each morning! LOL They aren't really morning people I don't think.

I've also been encouraging less screen time and spending more time outside OR inside doing hands-on or artistic or boardgame activities. We've gotten away from the No Screens Until Its Dark rule and need to get back to it! But you know...hang in there! I have found that once my kids are in that habit they're usually more pleasant to be around - less squabbling, more polite, more helpful.

  3. Okay, I had to chuckle at the "cold" evenings comment!! Although I can't complain too much, it's going to be in the low 60's tomorrow. That pic of the two boys at the end of the slide is too cute. Keep up the good work with the morning walks - eventually they will get used to it! Hope all is well, praying for you :)

  4. Okay...I'm so excited to read a post of yours again! (BTW, prayers are continuing dear lady!) The post about walking. LOL!!!! I loved the way you worded it and it is EXACTLY what my kids would be feeling (still after three weeks!) The book looks neat, too. And yes, your grandchildren are SO DANG cute! May you have a blessed and peace-filled Sunday, Laurie! Take care!

  5. I love your photos. You've done a marvelous job of collaging your week. Please consider adding this to my Friday link up-"Its a Wrap." It ends tonight and I will feature my favorite posts next week. -Savannah
