American History Update + Books On The American Revolution

This week was notebook organization week. We went back and "dotted the i's and crossed the t's" on what we have so far. Each of my boys had things to glue on or fill out that they had left incomplete from the past months.

A lot of this post is a repeat- just all in one post this time. ;)

We are making "history pockets" to hold all of our completed pages and projects.

James' pocket for the earliest settlers.

Mark's from the Northern, Middle, and Southern colonies.

James' booklet on the French and Indian War.

This is Mark's Revolutionary War dominoes page- as we study each event leading up the war, it is written under a domino. The booklet standing up is his French and Indian War book.

Some things that go in a pocket are as simple as a worksheet like this one mounted on a sheet of colored paper. The pockets were created to hold any useful/valuable information about that topic.

Books we are using for our American Revolutionary War study:

Liberty!: How the Revolutionary War Began (Landmark Books)

I love this picture book! Written in two-page layouts for each topic- "Rally Mohawks", "Unite or Die", "The Shot Heard Around The World"...- with lots of side bar information and pictures that add interest. You can view sample pages on Amazon.com. I wish I could remember which blogger recommended this book; I heartily thank her!!!

John Treegate's Musket (Living History Library)

My boys have really enjoyed this adventurous read! We are just about 1/2 through reading it and they anxiously await each new installment.

I have mentioned several times before, but to give due credit... these are the resources we are using-

Nicole at Journey for Excellence has provided the main inspiration for our study this year using America: The Story of Us video series.

The books from the "Hands-On History" series go along very well with the videos that we have been watching. Most of our printables, maps, and booklets are made from these.

Hands-On History: American Revolution

Watch Scholastic for sales- all the titles I purchased were $1 at the time.
