10 Of My Favorite Books!
There are a few of those "100 best books" lists going around. It's is interesting to see what other people have read, but they leave me feel rather "unread" as I usually have the lowest "score".
Okay, I know it is not a competition, but I thought I'd make my own list.
I score a 100% on this list because I have read and loved each and everyone of these books. :)
I am not giving a review of these books. Amazon has plenty of those! I am just giving a little of my story with each of these beautiful stories.
A Tree Grows in Brooklyn by Betty Smith
(the very first book that I truly loved and I used to reread it almost every year)
My Antonia by Willa Cather
(I couldn't get in to this book for the longest time- then one day I picked up and just loved it)
To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee
(this is the first assigned book I loved)
Uprising by Margaret Peterson Haddix
(I found this title in one of my "books on books" as a recommended read. It is recommended as a middle school book, but I would say that a good story is a good story. This one might actually be a bit to heavy for that age group. I had not read much about this time and place in history and found it fascinating)
Brideshead Revisited by Evelyn Waugh
(so I am a book stalker- if I see someone in public look engrossed in reading book, I try to catch the title. This book was being read by a friend's husband during a visit to the beach. His book looked well-loved. Dog ears and all. So I bought it and ... not so much. I really couldn't get in to it. The next summer, there he was reading it again! So I tried again. And I loved it!!
Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier
(I admit that I find this book a bit strange, but I love it anyway)
Persuasion by Jane Austen
(My girls are big Jane Austen fans. Pride and Prejudice is my oldest daughter's favorite and our copy of Mansfield Park was read so many times by my second daughter that it actually just fell apart. I read them, but I did not love Jane Austen until Persuasion. Not even sure what I love about this book, but I love it and this movie version.)
The Chosen by Chaim Potok
(this one was love at first sight- I think it was on the "Featured Book Shelf" at our local bookstore when I picked it up for a look and was hooked from the time I opened it. My daughters also love this book.)
Cry the Beloved Country by Alan Paton
(I bought this book and shared it with my mother-in-law, who bought this book to share with her sister, who bought this book to share with her friends... it's just that kind of book)
Bag of Marbles by Joffo Joseph
(speaking of my mother-in-law, she loaned me a copy of this book. When I finished reading it, I promptly purchased my own copy because I knew hers would get trashed by the time I shared it with all my girls- some of them are binding benders ;))
These are 10 of my favorite books. Not necessarily my all time favorites. I am not sure that I could pick just 10. Who could choose any book over Little Women? But I also love Papa's Wife, The Trumpeter of Krakow, Jane Eyre, The Hiding Place... and all of the historical fiction books that I have read with my children over the years for our school studies. Maybe I'll do a "10 More Of My Favorite Books" post sometime soon.

Do you think Julia would some of these? She's in need of a few good books ;)
ReplyDeleteI like your list! I never got into Cry, the Beloved Country. Sounds like I should try it again based on your family's experience with it.
ReplyDeleteJen, I think Julia will enjoy Papa's Wife and Mama's Bank Account. Not on my "list of 10" but on my list for sure!!
ReplyDeleteI just read A Tree Grows in Brooklyn - I just loved it, couldn't put it down! Brideshead Revisited - I'm not so sure about, I'm glad I read it but I don't think I loved it. You encouraged me to keep reading Jane Eyre and I'm so glad that I did, that's a great books too. Fantastic list and I will be adding to my To Be Read pile!!
ReplyDeletei too loved Persuasion and My Antonia...excited to take a few of your recommendations into the new year!
ReplyDeletepeace keep you.
