Our Shark Study::: Summer 2010

Our Shark Book List

Our Shark Lapbook

Shark Week at Our House
Each summer, I try to come up with a theme for our "summer school". My boys' enthusiasm for all things "shark" got me thinking. The boys have been visiting their grandma- who is also our next door neighbor and actually has tv with real channels! A few Animal Planet episodes and the boys are "shark experts". They ramble off shark facts at the speed of light. Add to that that I received a specific request from Mark (9yo) to study animals and I think we've got it (the theme that is ;))!

Resources we used:

The books shown above.

Core Resources:
HomeschoolShare's Shark Lapbook
Enchanted Learning
Always has cool stuff- you don't need a subscription to take advantage of this information.
Shark School This was one of our favorite resources

National Geographic is always a great resource:
National Geographic Sharks leads to all kinds of cool videos and info.

National Geographic for Kids How much do you really know about sharks? Swim through some "fin" facts about these amazing fish.

My boys love the shark "quizzes":
Quiz Your Noodle Sharks
At National Geographic Kids

Another Quiz
by Oracle Think Quest

Coloring pages were a highlight too:
Cool coloring pages from National Geographic
Sharks of the World Coloring Book

Plus a few fun books and videos from the library:
Sharks by Gail Gibbons, All About Sharks by Jim Arnosky, Time for Kids: Sharks (level 3 reader), Eyewitness Shark dvd, Magic School Bus: The Great Shark Escape

Short Videos:
Goblin Shark
Jumping Shark
Feeding Shark at Aquarium
Whale Shark

I picked up this resource at currclick to extend our study a bit for my older son:
Shark Unit Study from Homeschool Learning Network

*A trip to the aquarium to see real live sharks, if possible, is a perfect resource to round out a shark study.
This is an actual sign that was posted last summer at the beach where we swim.

I remember, as a kid, after watching the movie "Jaws" that I could barely stand to put my toes in a pool much less a lake or ocean, so, hopefully, I don't cause any undue stress with our little study. :)
