Drawing with Mr. Stebbing

I recently purchased the Beginning Drawing DVD set by Barry Stebbing. In order to get some much needed down time this afternoon, I decided that it was the perfect time to give it a try. This could be too soon to really give this product an unabashed thumbs up, but my boys and I really enjoyed our first session.

Paul loves to draw, so this was a no brainer for him.

I am always willing to "do art" but, as someone who can barely draw a recognizable stick figure, this is not an area where I exude confidence.

Mark said that this "was really fun!".

With this video, my 3 boys (ages 12, 10 and 7) and I felt very competent in our ability! We had a great time drawing geometric shapes, lines, contrast man, a cute little worm, a 3D box with a lid, a 3D fruit bowl (with fruit in it), and shading a piece of fruit. This first portion of video #1 also focused on color layering (put the lighter color down first).

James hit his groove.
This was a bit more complicated for James (7yo)- The older boys were able to keep up without pausing the video, so James quickly became frustrated. I suggested that he watch the video with us the first time and that I would watch it with him again and draw with him. That way we could pause the video as needed.

James did well with this format. We did not draw for quite as long as the older boys did, but he is anxious for our next lesson- a good sign.

We really did have a great time doing our lesson. And, always a sure sign that this was hit, the boys continued to draw on their own for quite a while this afternoon. I'll update when we have a few more lessons under our belt as to whether or not this is going to continue to be as great of a success as it was today!

I believe that I first spotted a review of these videos here.

  1. I would like to hear more! I was contemplating buying some kind of how-to for my 7yo. Thanks for posting!
