Another Week in Our Homeschool!

It is that time of the week, and I promised myself (last week) that I would stick to writing a "week in review" post. So here goes.

In the Reading Corner:

Still reading Peter and the Starcatchers. The boys are really crazy about this book. It has worked out that I can read for about 5 to 10 minutes most mornings, with a few stops and starts along the way, so it has been slow going. This is our "just for fun" read, so what's the hurry?

Thanks to the Picture Book Challenge, I am keeping my commitment to read more picture books to my 7yo. Those who have older children will understand how easy it is to prioritize from the top down- often, the older children's needs seem more urgent in the school sense. This year, I am backtracking and trying to get some "little kid" moments in for James. You can see our picture book reads for this week here.

In the Schoolroom:

On the Computer:
We have been working on a trial of time4learning. I have really enjoyed having this program for my "schoolish" son. He did lessons on place value, amphibians, and more this week. Often, at the end of the lesson, there are additional book recommendations to look for at the library on that subject, and I am able to print up a simple (nothing stressful) worksheet to add to James' workboxes to reinforce his learning. I will get to a complete post about this!!

Five in a Row:
Snowflake Bentley- we were suppose to be well done with book by now, but sometimes things don't work out that way. Rather than get discouraged, we just keep taking a few minutes here and there when we can. At any rate, the boys love this book and they are having fun.

Out of the House:

My oldest three homeschoolers coached (with help) the homeschool sports skills class that they hold 2 Wednesdays a month.

And, in response to my boys' completely overestimating their ocean going abilities, I signed them up for a 13 week "survival swim session"- they are loving it and it is great PE.

In the High School Corner:

Erin made this poster for her conversational Spanish class. This is a modified version of her family tree (a complete one would take a mountain of poster board- we have a huge family), but the purpose of the project is for in class discussion- not accuracy.

In the Backyard:

I already posted about this, but one of the highlights of the week was participating in the Great Backyard Bird Count.

Favorite Moment This Week:

It was so cold today that I had our co-op class come indoors for lunch (usually, the weather holds and we have heaters on our porch). It was just fun to watch and listen to them chat while they ate lunch and played games together. They really are a great group of people.

Join the wrap-up fun at Forever, For Always, No Matter What and Weird, Unsocialized Homeschoolers. You can see what other homeschoolers are up to and/or link up too.
