Sticking With It

Find what works. Stick with it.

I am a curriculum junkie wanna be- I probably stop short of being one because it would cost too much money. It is so easy to hear (or view) what the "Joneses" are doing and feel pressure to keep up with them (or just think what they have looks more fun!).

There are always valid reasons for tossing a curriculum overboard- I have done it. But, for the most part, curriculum works when used consistently.

That is not to say that mixing it up is wrong. I definitely have a low boredom threshold and enjoy the spark of something new. A fun go-along or a supplement to what I have on hand is always fun. Not mention that each child has his or her own learning style, so changing up might be needed.

The thing that I have found to be counterproductive is curriculum hopping to the extent of not getting our feet on the ground with what we have. Sometimes it is like trying a new food- a child may hate it at first, but once they have it served to them 2 or 3 times, they don't hate it. After a dozen or so times, they may claim that they actually like it.

I have tried many new things, but, ultimately, the things that work for us, work. Other products may be newer and sparklier, but the torn and tattered copy of our reading comprehension book has been loved around here since my 24 year old was a middle schooler.

To add to that hint- When I find myself frustrated with something that I have, I give it a time limit. We have held on through more than a few bumpy spots to find that something eventually works well when given some time.

I do have a disclaimer: We had a Latin book that my girls probably would have burned had I not given it away. It was on a three week time limit until one of my daughters burst in to tears when I pulled it out. At that point, I figured it was time to give up!! The time limit does work with many things though.

  1. This is good advice and I could definitely be a curriculum junkie too!! Never know when you will find the "perfect" thing :)

  2. I agree! I have often been tempted by the newest thing, but we are so happy with what we're using. I've learned to stay put unless something is truly not working.

  3. I just posted a similar idea last week - stick with it, but also know when to toss. http://bit.ly/hcNFkn

There are so many wonderful options for homeschoolers these days it can all seem overwhelming. I think the most important question is "Does this fit this child at this time?" Rather than what something cost or how well it reviews on Amazon. ;)

  4. Lori ~ there are days when I *wish* I did a box program and just didn't deviate. But, I enjoy the hunt too much to leave well enough alone at times. Reviewing homeschool curriculum on a regular basis doesn't help. Although, I can honestly say I have been blessed with things I might have never known about in the process.

  5. Really great advice! I've been trying to stick with things longer now.

I posted a link to your post on The Homeschool Classroom Facebook page for people to check it out. :)
