Field Trip::The Humane Society
I am so excited to share about this field trip! A perfect addition to our dog unit study
- and it was lots and lots of fun!
First, the kids got to help socialize and exercise two "foster" puppies. The foster mom works
at the humane society, so she brings them to work with her each day.
My group was more than happy to help out.
These little guys (Rottweiler/Pit Bull mix) were absolutely adorable.
Then we were given a tour of the facility. These are the kitty "condos". So super cute!
Lots of room and very clean.
Pretty fancy!
All the kids would have walked out of there with a half dozen animals if they were allowed.
This is the kitty playroom. If you look closely at the sun on the wall, you will see a sleeping kitty.
My awesome group of field trip kiddos.
I love this picture.
The HSSV has been in operation for 82 years. It began when our valley was primarily an agricultural area and there were lots of horses. The first animal taken in was a horse that was in need of retirement. HSSV will take and keep (or find someone to keep) any animal. They have even housed an alligator until they returned it to its rightful home. They also do not put down any animals they receive.
If need be, an animal can live its life out there.

I have to say that the ladies who showed us around were amazing. They enthusiastically answered all questions and did a great job showing (and telling) the children what goes on in their facility.
We are going to have a follow up day and make some blankets and toys to donate
(as per instructions given us) for the kitty area.

How fun! My kid would want to come back with a bunch of new animals too! (I think 1 dog, 1 cat, a 55 gallon fish tank, and 10 chicks are plenty! LOL) Thanks for stopping by my blog! The kids have gone about 2 weeks without media...and they really haven't asked about getting it back! (My daughter wants to see the Disney vacation planner DVD though as she's going in the fall.) And they haven't complained about "boredom"! (Now I have been watching TV after they go to bed and hopping on the computer. LOL)
ReplyDeletewhat a fun trip! Thanks for linking up!
ReplyDeleteOh my goodness. I may look up our own local chapter and see if field trips are available! This was a fantastic idea. I'm afraid that my kiddos would want to bring home half the animals as well!
ReplyDeleteGreat post you should consider linking up to the NOBH this month they are asking about post to animal shelter and doing a give away to the winning post this month:) Check it out\
