Tintin- We loved this movie! I am not sure why. Maybe it is that Tintin is in a movie! Then there is that the movie really honored the feel of the book (we felt), and that the makers seemed to want to do right by the author's vision (watch special features). Of course, it could be that I just love being able to sit down and watch a movie just for fun without feeling like, on some level, I might be corrupting my children!
The Adventures of Superman: Season 1 (1952)- If your kids are super sophisticated, they may not appreciate this. Mine did. I don't know what else to say. It is just fun.
Japan: Memoirs of a Secret Empire Always grateful when our Netflix subscription can enhance the learning experience!
Recently Cooked:
This super simple (like 5 minutes of prep) Easy Garlic Chicken dish found at food.com. I read through the comments- some said that the dish was too sweet, some that it needed onion, others that the cook time was too short/long... I made it just as the recipe suggested and it was PERFECT! A scoop of rice and some broccoli and the whole family was happy.

Stick to it! My son, who has some pretty serious reading delays, is learning that he needs to keep getting up. Just like he each time he fell when snowboarding, he needs to not give up just because of a struggle! It is a tough lesson, but he really is working on it! I am so proud of him!

Recently Learned:
By request, Mark is learning to sew- mend really. In his words, "Mom, just teach me so that I don't have to wait for you to have time when I need something sewed." How can I say no? His favorite pajama pants are in serious need of fixing, so he is motivated.

Typing- Just to see how they are progressing, I held a paper over each of the boys' hands so that they could not see the keyboard. I was very surprised how well they all are doing. James (8yo) not only did very well, but looks forward to typing lessons each day- he even tries to negotiate doing that instead of other school work. Once or twice, it has worked. ;)

Forts. The "construction yard" has been taken over as a "nerf gun battle zone". Boys and mom are happy! I get quiet (unless I go outside to listen); they get some crazy, fun playtime!
And for the last one... Recently visited:
We have had geese in our yard before. I don't think ducks. They seemed like they might be looking for a place to nest. Not so much after the kids, dog, and crazy camera lady came out to see them!

Love how you did this post, Laurie! Such good lessons learned in real life can be applied to our school work...(and vice versa:) Love that snow boarding analogy. You have some serious artistic and building talent in your family! Love that determination in your "mender" too:)
ReplyDeleteGlad your son is persevering with his reading. It can be so frustrating for them as well as a self-esteem squasher. The photo with the duck is so charming! I think the Garlic Chicken recipe sounds so yummy, we will have to give it a try.
