This Week:::A Kid's Eye View

After another crazy week, I enlisted the boys to help with our highlights. They were more than happy to assist.

From Paul and Mark:

On Spanish:
All of our friends come over to do Spanish on Thursdays. We take turns going to class in groups. We got some homework- we don't like that. Senorita Joyce read us a really fun story about "el raton" (the mouse). At the end, she asked us questions in Spanish from the story and we answered them in Spanish- like how old the mouse is- "diez"- and how old is his friend. We are going to get our own copy of the book so that we can read along with her.

On Geography Class:
For our geography class, we went to a nearby park; we saw a monstrous frog, 2 damsel flies, fish, several ducks, and a bird trying to steal a fish from another bird. We read Paddle-to-the-Sea, and we made our own Paddles-to-the-Sea and set them sailing in the pond.

From James:

On Reading:
I read my book with Grandma. This story was much harder, so we are going to read some of the old stories next time. We made Molasses cookies and they are my favorite kind.

From Mom:
On Calendar Time

I mentioned this in a previous post, but I thought I'd expand on it.

I never had to do this with my girls. It seems from their youngest years, they had little pocket calendars, planners and journals that they kept. Boys don't really get those types of things for birthdays and such. And, they have never showed any interest them.

This year, I decided that they needed to be able to track their own days. Each morning, the boys take out their calendars. They mark off the day, see what is coming up, and add any new events. At the beginning of the month, we highlight the moon phases, highlight the legal holidays, look up specially noted days (there were some holidays in September that we had never heard of), note any season changes, fill in our appointments and activities, and write in any special dates. The boys have been surprisingly enthusiastic about this.

The hangman notes an ortho appt. for a less than enthusiastic patient.

There is not much to this, but it has been a useful activity. I also think the boys build more anticipation for upcoming events. I find Mark (10yo), especially, pulling out his calendar to count the days until "such and such" is happening.

  1. Great idea to have the boys help with the week in review! I love the calendar idea, my oldest has had a calendar in his room for years, my next one still has no clue what day of the week it is and doesn't care!! :) Thanks for linking up!

  2. I love your boys comments! What a great idea to have them write a post. I never thought to incorporate my 11 year olds calendar into the day. Love the moon tracking ideas. Have a great weekend.

  3. Great calendar ideas. My 12 yos will ask me what day it is when there's a calendar hanging on the wall next to him.
