Week in Review::April 11-15

School Highlights:

We finished our Astonishing Animals study with a fun game of animal charades.
Blurry picture, but it shows that we really did have fun playing animal charades.

Basket of animal books- lots of fun reading!

On to Handsome Horses! We have learned how to measure a horse, how big a "hand" is, some horse vocabulary, a bit about the history of horses, ... We also learned about Arabian Horses. This completes "day 1". Our goal is to complete one day a week.

We also did this science experiment on "the Coanda effect". I don't want to repeat (repost) myself, but I want to give a thumbs up to Exploration Education. Being the science person I am not, I had a few questions (as my kids will attest to, I can get carried away with questions!;)). I emailed the author of this program and got a response just hours later:

When discussing the subject of fluid dynamics, both liquids (like water) and gases (the air we breathe) are considered fluids. A simplified definition of a fluid is any matter that takes the shape of the container it is in. For example, if you put a rock (solid) in a jar it remains the shape of the rock. However if you pour water into the jar, it completely fills the space taking the shape of the jar. Air behaves in the same manner, filling the jar – taking its shape. So in answer to your question, the newsletter is correct by saying “air is a fluid”, just like “water is a fluid”. There are hundreds of articles online regarding this. Just type in “air is a fluid” or “fluid dynamics” into your search engine and you will have more than enough to research.

Hope this helps,
John

Misty of Chincoteague- the last time we read this book, I think Paul (12yo) was 7 or so. I am looking forward to sharing this book again!

Some Picture Books - I am a bit behind my goal for the picture book challenge, but we keep plugging along.

  2. What a great explanation from Exploration Education! And easy to understand. I'm with you on the science stuff :)

    It is such a joy to see your sons with their nephew. It reminds me of my yougest brothers and their nieces and nephews at that age. Very sweet! They will grow up to be great dads themselves.
