On the Easy Reading Shelf
Brave Norman : A True Story
A "hard to place" shelter dog finds a home with a loving family. The dog goes blind. In spite of those who say this is too much of a burden, the family keeps their commitment to this dog that they love. In an unexpected turn of events, this "unwanted" dog saves the day at the beach by rescuing a drowning girl!! Really, truly. A true story about a canine hero is the perfect read in James' eyes.
Why Do Horses Neigh?
This book is leveled for 4-7 year old readers. For James (7yo), a few words needed to be sounded out, but it was just the right difficulty and length for his patience level (which is not very long!). Plus, and this is a big plus when looking for easy reader books, James thought it was interesting.
Tara and Tiree, Fearless Friends: A True Story
Another one from the Pets to the Rescue series. This book gets off to a heart stopping start with Jim and his dogs walking across the frozen lake, and then Jim plunging through the broken ice into the life-threateningly cold water. Jim's dogs quickly show what they are made of. Don't worry-- there is a happy ending for Jim and his "brave and wonderful" dogs.
A Den is a Bed for a Bear
I love this book! It is a perfect easy reader and would also be a great read-to for little ones. It is hard to do this book justice in writing- each two page layout has its own bright color background, there are stunning photographs of adorable bears, chalk drawings embellish most pages, and there is solid information that an early reader will appreciate (as opposed to easy reader books that seem to fit the most boring facts into limited vocabulary). This is the first book in this National Geographic series that I have seen, but I notice a few more on amazon.com, so I plan to check them out too.

YOu find such neat books for the kids! Way to go, Mom!
ReplyDeleteLori, what a wonderful selection of stories. I have recently reviewed a number of animal friendship books. Brave Norman is one I think I will have to get for myself. Thank you
ReplyDeleteHi Lori, I agree with Joanna. This is indeed such a lovely collection of stories. I envy the way that you are able to kind of condense and synthesize all your thoughts together about a book in such a concise way - I tend to ramble in my blogposts and just go on and on and on (this being an example). =)
