Games We Play

I am not sure how it all began, but I suspect is was with my mom's fondness for Yahtzee. A good family gathering meant playing Yahtzee. No.other.game. Yahtzee was it. We thrive on more variety around here, but I have to confess a fondness for the game of Yahtzee as well. :)

I'll also factor in that we are "older" parents now and games can be played sitting on our tushy!! :) And, when Erin was the only "big kid" at home most of the time, playing games was something that I could do with just her after the boys went to bed... no matter how it all began, we do love our games!!

A few new ones that we are playing:

There's A Moose In The House- This game is listed for ages 8 and up, but I am sure it could be taught to much younger players (a patient teacher may be needed). It took us a few minutes to get all the rules down for this game- like only one moose per room, a "moose trap" card works only for moose in rooms, and for heaven's sake don't forget to say "you have a moose in your bathtub!". If all this sounds like nonsense, that is because it is! That is the fun of this game. It just gets so silly that pretty soon your 10 yo is laughing so hard that he is snorting.

From Gamewright: Eeek! There's a moose loose in the kitchen... and another in the bathroom! In this silly matching card game, the goal is to keep moose out of your house, while at the same time give them to your opponents. Use a door to close off empty rooms or if you're lucky, plant a moose trap to keep those loveable but uninvited visitors away! The player with the fewest moose wins.

7Ate9- This game is also listed for ages 8 and up. Younger players can easily learn to play this game, but might get very frustrated when playing with an older brother who is probably going to be much more adept at this fast paced game. This one is not meant to be funny, but whenever my 13yo plays with me, I eventually wind up winning because he is laughing at me. :) I guess me fumbling with cards and trying frantically to get one on the stack is a funny thing.

Product overview from "Out of the Box Publishing": Players add, or subtract, 1, 2, or 3 to the number on the top card on the pile to determine if they have a card that can be played next. Sounds simple, but with everyone playing simultaneously, the options are constantly changing. The first player out of cards wins!

This Big- This one is actually from Christmas, but has been brought out of the game drawer after a brief hiatus. Each player gets a turn at being the fisherman and puts out a "lure card". The other players place a fish card (one that matches the lure) face down on the table and the fisherman gets to choose which one he has "hooked". The tricky part is that you might get a piece of junk instead of a fish. Usually by the end of the game, all poker faces are gone and the boys are bursting into laughter before they even put their card down. This game is top choice for my 8yo. He loves it!

From Gamewright:  The story about the fisherman who nearly caught a fish that was this big is about as old as the sea. Now you get the chance to add to this classic tradition of embellishment with this clever card game. As you cast lures and try to catch fish, you'll have to read opponents poker faces and try to figure out who's playing the best fish and who's just bluffing with river rubbish!

  1. We have 7ate9 and love it! I bought it for Sally's goody bag on our car trip up north last summer. The others sounds fun. I wish I had your spirit. We don't do games as much as we should (great family time), but the lazy hazy days of summer are a good time to start, right? Have a wonderful holiday weekend!

  2. I love Yahtzee and played it a lot growing up. We aren't so great at playing games around here, but it is a fun way to all be together.
