Picture Book Challenge::Another True Animal Story And More

One would think that there would be a limit to how many animal stories there are...
I have not found that to be so. Another one for the "animal story" list:

HERBERT: The True Story Of A Brave Sea Dog - All three of my boys (even my 13yo) loved this story. This is the story of a boy's dog, Herbert, who was lost at sea and then found after 30 hours in the water. My boys especially enjoyed the "Map of Herbert's Journey" in the front of the book, and the actual pictures of Herbert and his owner, Tim, in the back of the book along with a newpaper article and letters written to Tim about his dog. Tim's words as he went in search of his dog- "this will be the worst day of my life or the best day of my life"- also made a big impression. My boys, dog lovers in a big way, took Tim's predicament to heart.

Recently read books that we did not get to with our
"Astonishing Animal" study last month turned out to be fun as well:

What Do You Do With A Tail Like This? I remember the big hubub when this book was first released. I had to wait for quite a while to check it out from the library back then. It does not have the mile long waiting list anymore, but it is still a great book! James had a great time matching the animal parts to the animal they belonged to. The book is kind of like a guessing game- one page shows parts (like the eyes of 5 different animals) and the next page shows the animals that those parts belong to. I was surprised how many animals James knew. James was surprised that crickets hear with ears that are on their knees! There is also a more indepth look at each animal in the back pages of this book.

Penguins! I am tempted to just write "by Gail Gibbons- 'nuf said". There is just no comparison to her non-fiction books. We had several other penguin books checked out from the library that had a similar format, but this book just drew James in.

Last on our picture book list this week:

Seven Loaves of Bread: This crazy twist on the "little red hen" story brings home a good message: If you are going to do the job, you may as well do it right! James enjoyed this book, but I think he would have loved it about 3 years ago (about 5yo). For those "Five in a Row-ers" out there- the woodcut illustrations are similar in feel to "Snowflake Bentley" and would make a nice go-along for an art lesson.

44 read
156 to go

I want to note that I may be stealing borrowing book ideas from other Picture Book Challenge bloggers- I keep my library tab open and often order books that sound interesting to read to my boys as I see them. I don't always note the source, and often cannot figure out why in the world I even ordered a certain book when I am notified that it is ready to be picked up! I try to give credit when I can, but I thank all the great book bloggers out there who share their reviews of children's picture books!!

Comments

  1. Blogger did something weird so I had to repost. Not that anyone would notice, but I don't want someone to think that I deleted their comment! (I think there were 2)
