California State Railroad Museum

Continuing on with our CA history theme, we visited the railroad museum.
History aside, trains just really are awesome.

All these toy trains (above) come from one private collection. Very impressive.

This young man that James was playing next to was being given a hard time by what appeared to be his grandma (who thought he was too old to play with trains). After she commented a few times about this, I had to say (very nicely- I promise) that I don't think you're ever too old to play with trains- she smiled and agreed, and the boys played peacefully for quite a while.

The making of the Transcontinental Railroad was fraught with all the politics and drama that one might expect in taking on such a monumental project. Our tour guide did a great job explaining the players in this episode in our country's history- I am afraid I would not do it justice, but this link goes to the museum's site and gives lots of great info

  5. I *think* I've been there! My husband works with the railroad and possibly because of that he is a bit of a *ahem* fanatic about locomotives and trains. We've been to _quite_ a few museums. If I haven't been to this one- it's definitely one I should go to!
We've been to Promontory Point, UT, too lol.
Thank you for stopping by my blog earlier and leaving an encouraging comment. I agree that letting kids be kids is very important- the academic world seems to forget that.
