Korean Market Field Trip

Some of my favorite field trips are really just family outings exploring our community. Visiting a local Korean food market seemed like the perfect fit for a cold, drizzly day when dad is home. Fortunately, where we live there are several choices- after checking the ratings on Yelp, I chose this one.

First of all, this is an impressive market. In the end, we decided that it put our little Safeway grocery store to shame!

We began in the produce aisle where many things looked familiar, but many there were also lots of items that we had not seen or heard of. After spending some time admiring this section we chose a Korean pear and some ginger root to bring home.

On to the bakery- again, some things looked familiar, but we chose items that were had not tried before to purchase. Pastries with red bean paste and banana shaped bread were our picks.

We explored the prepared food aisle- little squid anyone? Very impressive and pretty!

The seafood department was amazing!! Fresh (I mean still swimming!) fish for the taking. And the boys were drooling over the meat section (I don't know what it is with boys, but my guys are carnivores!).

We headed over to the Kimchi section. There is an entire aisle dedicated to it- we had thought to purchase some, but the reality is that my boys are not that adventurous.

Moving on...

We ended our trip at the candy/snack aisle. It was far to crowded to gracefully snap off a picture, but we managed to purchase a few treats.

We checked out our items and headed home for a taste test. :)

We have not tried the Korean pear, but we gave the puffs on the right a try (so-so by the boys' rating)- the crispy treat on the upper left was enjoyed by all. The red bean pastry was definitely a different texture and taste than we are accustomed to. The banana shaped bread got the highest rating!

He is tasting it- or is he?

Yes, the banana shaped bread is a hit.

Mark's question in all of this- where's the beef? ;)

  6. What a great experience! It is so hard to shop when you have no idea what to get! I have tried it in China Town SF. My 7th grade teacher had us try a variety of Asian and Middle Eastern foods at the end of his geography class. Most of the items were not liked very well, but it was a memorable experience...I remember it some 35+ years later!
