Learning About Astonishing Animals
Just a month ago, I wrote "stick with what you have" (more or less) in reference to homeschooling curriculum. None the less, in this last month we have now tried two new things!
Today it was Download N Go, a complete unit study series. For our first try at this, I ordered "Astonishing Animals". My two youngest boys have been begging (yes, actually begging) to "study animals- puh-leese, mom!!" so, after hearing my sister's experiences with this product, I thought we'd give it a try.
Our study guide includes links to videos, lapbook components, worksheets, links to the necessary information, and library resources (many of which our library actually has) for each of 5 days of study. We have just completed day one of our unit study, and I will say that it was a full day!!
Awesome video of Aye-Aye eating. It is on YouTube- I did not see any inappropriate images when this ended, but I am always cautious to warn people when linking to a video there.
I am just sharing this because we enjoyed it today! We purchased this product to use.

Day 1: What Exactly Is an Aye-Aye?
When dad got home, he was informed exactly what an Aye-Aye is plus a few other interesting facts!
*Aye-Aye is a kind of Lemur
*Lives in Madagascar
*Madagascar is an island off the southeast coast of Africa
*Aye-Ayes are nocturnal
*They are solitary
*Largest Nocturnal Primate
*Weighs about 4 lbs
*Is about 16 inches long (plus 2 ft. tail)
*Eats insects and insect larvae by finding the hollow part of the tree that has bugs living in it and making a hole in the tree with its teeth, and then digs into the hole with its long finger to bring out its food.
*It is 10, 992 miles from our house to Madagascar.
*There are 60 kinds of Lemurs known
This is what I can actually remember them sharing! They also brought dad out to the schoolroom to watch a video of the Aye-Aye eating and one of two Aye-Ayes at the Denver Zoo- they asked if we could go to Denver for vacation this year. :)

Thank you for posting about this!! We are just beginning a short study of George Washington and I was hoping to try a lapbook with the boys again, we haven't been so successful with them in the past, but they are older now and I am hoping it will be more fun for them. There is a George Washington study that I just downloaded!
ReplyDeleteAs Jen said, thank you!!! for posting about this site. I was thinking ahead for Stan and I've decided I will not be doing Seton with him next year. I was going to be making a list of sites and curriculum between now and summer as I'll have to form my own for him. The girls will also love the you tube video since they love anything about animals!!!
