New Games

I am sure I am not the only mom who uses holidays and other special occasions to give a refresher to the activity cabinet. I am not stictly speaking about "educational" items, but worthwhile items. Things that bring the family together to have fun and maybe learn something too. Here are a few of our favorites  from Christmas 2010:

Lego Creationary:
I was worried that my boys would not love the structured game format when it came to Legos, but that is not the case- they love it!

I, however, quickly discovered that I don't think in Lego. For the life of me, I cannot build a thing. When my turn is up, my son will quickly show me- "like this mom"- and in two seconds he has created the object on my card. I think they like playing with me because they don't ever come in last place when I play. That is okay- I still have fun.

 Pick and Draw:

A huge hit!! My boys (especially my 7yo) love this drawing game. Really, the whole family has a blast playing it. I would say that it is more of an activity than a game, but fun all the same.

Each player chooses his cards and places them face down in front of him. Each card specifies the face part to be drawn- eyes, ears, nose, mouth... When the game begins, the player turns over his cards (one at a time) in the order given, and then draws the part of the cartoon face shown on the turned up card.

One of the great things about this activity is that you can goof around with the rules and make your own game. My 7 yo and I left all the cards in their stacks in the middle of the table and just picked each card from there. We played until all of the cards were gone and the "winner" was the one who made the most drawings. Neither of remember who won- just that it was really fun.

Our newest version is to have each player pick his cards, draw the face in the usual format, and then pass his cards to the player on his left. In a complete round, everyone at the table would have used each set of cards in play to make a drawing. Then have fun comparing drawings (this would not work well with an insecure artist).

The creator of this fun game also has a blog with some great drawing stuff. Definitely worth stopping by to take a look.

I would say that this sort of an elaborate game of "Go Fish!". I have to confess that I was not sure that the boys were loving it at first, but they request to play this game a lot. The box gives the ages as 8 yrs and up, but I would say that any 6yo could play (maybe with an adult to explain the rules the first few times).

I am thinking Paul won this round.

James takes his cards very seriously!
