Week in Review::January 24-28

Organizing: Reorganization is the still the key word around here. I had a little set back when I gave up caffeinated soda and spent two days in a semi-coma! Honestly. The school room is next on my list.

School Time: Just trying to keep up with the basics. My big goal right now is to try and get started earlier. We used to do math before breakfast and that was always a good feeling having that one thing checked off first thing in the morning.

In the High School Corner: Erin worked on this fun drawing for her co op class.

Creativity: Paul (12yo) has decided he wants to make a boat. It might be more accurate to say that he is obsessed with making a boat.  He has been doing all sorts of mock ups and running tests to determine what materials will work best. There has been lots of figurin' going on with building things to scale and all, so I would say that it is a fairly educational project.

Reading: We are still reading "Peter and the Starcatchers". The boys are crazy over this book. I am not sure how much I love this book, but I think I make a fantastic pirate voice! ;) We are also trying to up our dose of picture books. I posted a review of the picture books we read this week.

Cooking:  After reading a post earlier this school year at Harmony Art Mom Blog, I was encouraged to let my boys participate more in food preparation.  For moms who work well in the kitchen with kids, this may seem simple enough. As a mom who gets stressed with young helpers, it was a bit of a leap to come to this conclusion. At any rate, I have been working on including the boys and they really seem to enjoy it. There are not too many chores that offer a child a chance to make such a tangible contribution to the family.

In the Plan Book: We are starting back on Five in a Row as I had committed to do this year. I had planned to begin with "Storm in the Night", but have not gotten a hold of a copy yet. So, we are going to go with a weather theme instead. Planned for next week is "Snowflake Bentley" and then "Katy and the Big Snow" for the week after that. Hopefully, the library will have "Storm in the Night" on my hold shelf by the time we finish those. I also picked up some weather go-alongs at the library.

Outside the Home: The older two boys continue with their Lego Robotics class (amazing!), Erin and Paul coached at their homeschool PE program (this week was football drills, dodgeball, and volleyball drills), and we took a quick trip to our local zoo!

Cappybaras are our favorite!

The Latest Craze: Darts.

Just Cuz-Silly Boys Watching a Movie:
We may not have regular television channels, but my boys discovered that they can access "instant watch" Netflix on my iPod. They think it is great!- I think it is hysterical to see all three of them gathered around a three inch screen watching a show.

That's our week! I am joining in the weekly wrap-up link at Forever, For Always, No Matter What. You can go there to see other wrap-ups and join in as well. I am also linking up to Weird, Unsocialized Homeschoolers.

  1. Thanks for linking up! Wow, you had a busy week. No caffeine??? I have done that a couple of times (I am back to being a coffee drinker!) and it really is amazing how yucky it makes you feel for a few days. Keep up the good work! Can't wait to see how the boat turns out. I agree that cooking with kids can be both rewarding and challenging! Storm in the Night is a cute story, we also love Snowflake Bentley and Katy ~ good stuff from FIAR! Have a great weekend!

  2. Sounds like you had a busy and productive week! I need to get my kids in the kitchen more too - it's hard because you know there will be more messes than if you just did it yourself. But the lessons that will be learned...

  3. That last picture took me a moment to figure out what they were so intent on. It's so funny that a lot of kids would balk at watching something on such a tiny screen (with the huge screens nowadays).
    Organization was a topic I haven't gotten any where with in my life so I will keep an eye on your blog (which I already follow) to see how I can become more organized ;) Give me some good tips!
    Have a great weekend!

  4. I love seeing blogs on older kids! My oldest is almost 12 (in a couple of weeks), so it's GREAT to see what's in the future! LOVE the Animal Cell! GREAT JOB ERIN! LOL at the boy's watching netflix on the iPod!
