Advice From A Homeschool Expert...

Not so much.

The funny thing is that after 20 years of homeschooling, I am still not an expert. Homeschooling girls is different than boys, having adult children humbles you (even wonderful adult children!:)), and, like anything, the more you know, the more you know that you don't know everything (or maybe anything).

However, I know a good thing when I see it, so I thought I'd share a few of my homeschool resource library must haves.

My very first pick is this fabulous book. It is not a homeschool book per se, but it is the book that set our homeschool on a different course.

Like many homeschool moms, I was already a book nut when I first read this book. And I already read aloud to my children--- lots.

However, this book revolutionized the way I viewed reading aloud to my children and how I incorporated it into our day.

The Read-Aloud Handbook: Sixth Edition

I am tempted to go on and on... how my son who did not like books became (and still is) a huge book fan, how my college age daughter, who often found herself participating in our new read aloud routine, commented how much it helped her in classes that she was now so comfortable reading aloud. There is so much more, but I will leave it at this book is inspiring.

I have an affinity for the 5th edition of The Read Aloud Handbook. That is the one that I first read- that I first borrowed from the library and post-it noted dozens of pages, and then had to remove all the post-its when the librarian told me that I could not renew the book one more time (I almost cried).

I have given away my copy of this book so many times over the years that I have lost track of how many times I have repurchased it. I did eventually buy the 6th edition, but gave it away too, so I have my favorite edition on the way via a used book seller as I type.

*I noticed when linking this book that it is on sale for almost 50% off at amazon.com.

  2. I really love this book too!! Such a good reminder of how important it is to just slow down and read to our kids and provide them the opportunity to sit down and read themselves.
