Picture Book Challenge::A Guide Dog and A War Dog
I am thinking that I should rename my blog having something to with animal books...
Morris and Buddy: The Story of the First Seeing Eye Dog by Becky Hall
Learning about working dogs in our "Dog Unit Study" led us to this book. It is not only a wonderful story about Morris and his seeing eye dog, it is also about the challenges faced by Morris at a time when few accommodations were made for those with physical limitations (blindness or other). How Morris traveled to Switzerland to meet his own guide dog, Buddy, and ultimately paved the rode for the "Seeing Eye" guide dog school was an inspiring read. You can also read more about Morris here.
Nubs: The True Story of a Mutt, a Marine, & a Miracle by Major Brian Dennis, Kirby Larson, and Mary Nethery
My boys loved this story of an unlikely friendship between a Marine and a "dog of war". This book follows the story of "Nubs" (so named by the Major Brian Dennis because of his cut off ears), and his devotion to his new found Marine friends. After a 70 mile trek to follow his friends across the desert, it was decided that Nubs needed a home- an American home. So began the emails, fundraising, and paperwork needed to accomplish this mission... My boys loved this true story about a Marine (a close friend of theirs is a former Marine), his dog (they love dogs), and happy ending (who does not like a happy ending). Also enjoyed were the real photographs of Major Brian Dennis and Nubs, and the Major's correspondence concerning Nubs interspersed throughout the story.

Horse Books Wrap-Up:
I did not officially link our Horse Book Wrap-Up to the picture book challenge. The age levels on the some
of the books did not match the requirements, and I did not review each book individually.
However, if you are interested in such things, you can read about it here.
Yes, our blogs have a lot in common! I love any working animal books and shall be looking out for these when I visit some libraries this summer in the US. Haven't read anything on dogs + war.
ReplyDeleteLori, thanks for stopping by, of course you can link up an older post! :D I'd love to have you link up! :D
