4 Easy Readers, 2 Dog Heroes, And 1 Unlikely Friendship

Books by Alan Baron:
Red Fox And The Baby Bunnies
The Red Fox Monster
Little Pig's Bouncy Ball
Red Fox Dances

It appears that these titles are out of print; we borrowed them from the library. James (8yo) took charge of read aloud time with them. The front covers of the books have the phrase "giggle club" in the corner, which makes sense because James giggled frequently while reading them. With a very controlled vocabulary, these books are easily read by the 4-8 yo crowd (depending on their readiness). For a nice read aloud session, they are also the perfect length to finish a book (or two) in one sitting. While the story line was entertaining to James, it is the illustrations that tickled his funny bone.

Togo by Robert J. Blake

This is a newly discovered author for us and we love his books (the two we have read so far). While my 8-year-old will listen to almost any picture book attentively, it takes something a little more special to keep the rapt attention of my older two boys (10&13). This one did. This sit on the edge of your seat tale of "Togo", reported to be the true hero of the great serum run of 1925, is written with detail that bears out the painstaking research the author does to write his books. My boys give it a 10/10.

As a read aloud this book is not quite as spellbinding as some, but, in all fairness, it is written as an early reader. In spite of that fact, this is a great true story of a true dog hero. This dog proved his worthiness as a rescue dog repeatedly, saving over 40 lives. As an odd side note, Barry's body was mounted after he died and is displayed in a Swiss museum- you can find pictures by searching "google image". We enjoyed reading this book together.

Tara and Bella: The Elephant and Dog Who Became Best Friends by Carol Buckley

Who could resist? This adorable pair was made to be in a picture book! The story is wonderful, but the photographs make this book. We loved reading this story and it has been one that my boys have shared with visiting sisters, grandma, brother-in-laws... It is pretty cool.
